HISTORIANS LAUNCH PETITION TO STOP NEW AIRPORT IN CUSCO REGION IN PERU

Three Peruvian historians have launched a petition urging Peru’s president Martin Vizcarra to abandon plans to build an airport in Chinchero in the Cusco region. The petition acknowledges various concerns previously identified - including the altitude, lack of studies, excessively high costs - but focuses ‘above all on the irreparable danger that this project would cause for Peruvian culture and humanity.’ Chinchero, the petition states, is at a ‘high point dominating the Incas’ Sacred Valley.’ To date, over 1,500 people have signed.
