PERU MUST DO U-TURN TO PROTECT AMAZON FROM ILLEGAL LOGGING, SAYS GLOBAL WITNESS

Peru must reverse a decision taken last month and make forest inspections agency OSINFOR independent again, urges Global Witness in a new report made public today. Titled The Forest Avengers, the report draws on previously unpublished data and documents long-standing, widespread illegalities across Peru’s logging sector. It makes numerous recommendations, including one that OSINFOR, which was moved to the Ministry of Environment last month, becomes effectively independent again, as in accordance with Peru’s so-called ‘Trade Promotion Agreement’ with the USA. For details on that move, see my recent article in The Ecologist. At the same time Global Witness, for whom I was working as a consultant until recently, has released a short film featuring undercover footage of Peruvian timber company representatives caught on camera talking about OSINFOR. (17-01-2019)
