GUATEMALAN SUING CANADIAN MINING COMPANY REPORTED TO RECEIVE THREATS

In Canada there are currently three civil lawsuits against Canadian mining company Hudbay Minerals and the Compania Guatemalteca de Niquel (CGN) after the gang-rape of 11 Maya Qeqchi women, the shooting and killing of a Maya Qeqchi man, and the shooting and paralysis of another Maya Qeqchi man, German Chub – all in Guatemala, all near Central America’s biggest nickel mine, Fenix. ‘Litigation is currently in the ‘discovery phase’, and after [that] will proceed to trial, which will likely be in 2-5 years,’ says Cory Wanless, from Klippensteins which represents all 13 plaintiffs. But what if the plaintiffs back out? To mark the 5th anniversary of the shootings, NGO Rights Action has sent a letter – signed by more than 100 individuals and organizations– to Hudbay and CGN saying Chub has been receiving threatening visits attempting to persuade him to abandon legal action in Canada, as well as in Guatemala, where there is a criminal lawsuit too.
